Scent Messages & Memory
As a Certified Consultant with Scentsy Fragrance, I often talk to my customers and hostesses about Scent Memory, and how powerful that concept is.
Have you ever noticed that a particular scent can bring forth a rush of memories? The smell of cookies baking (Scentsy Fragrance: Sugar Cookie: Warm, sweet blend of butter, sugar, and creamy vanilla.) might remind you of spending time at your grandmother's house when you were a small child. The scent of a particular perfume or cologne (Scentsy Fragrance: Shaka: Classically cool: rich sandalwood infused with a splash of bergamot and lime.) might remind you of a romantic partner with whom your relationship ended on a sour note.
Adding onto the concept of Scent and Memory, I want to touch base on something that I have found quite interesting, which is the concept of Scent Messages.
You're probably thinking, what the heck is a Scent Message??...
Well, its a similar concept to Scent Memory, meaning that when you happen to smell a particular scent, it evokes something that you remember in a personal way, however, research has found that you can actually alter your mood by evoking these memories.
When we smell, a chemical formula rises in the nose and lands on thousands of smell receptors which identifies them and forwards the information to the brain. The brain in turn then responds with “These molecules are configured in such a way that I recognize them as the smell of coffee which I associate with a great taste and a pick-me-up feeling. I think I’ll get up and have a cup.”
Scentsy Fragrance: Perk Me Up - Simply the most perfect cup of coffee you’ll ever experience. A strong brew of Guatemalan coffee beans and just a touch of hazelnut.
The feeling associated with, for example, coffee, reminds us of the feeling of a pick-me-up, or in other words an energetic feeling. Whether or not you actually have that cup of coffee is a choice you make on your own, however, the scent itself already worked in such a way as to remind you of the feeling of being awake and energized.
Much like motivational images or quotes that our sense of sight or hearing to encourage a change in behavior, scent messages also change the behavior connected to the scent.
For example, the scent of lavender (Scentsy Fragrance: French Lavender: Pure, herbal fragrance of wild lavender from the hills of France.) sends the scent message that triggers feelings of relaxation. Once memorized by the brain in that sense, exposure to that particular scent can trigger that feeling at any given time.
This has made researchers make great progress on Scent Therapy, and the study of how scent can manipulate and change the moods of a person.
Scent Therapy is an exciting new technology that gives individuals personal control over enhancing moods and influencing behavior.
Pretty neat stuff huh?
I found it interesting anyway!! Another reason why I love Scentsy Fragrance! The power of scent is unbelievable, and unknown by most!
Now.... maybe I should try some scent memory therapy at home on myself.... how can I motivate myself with scent to CLEAN and DO LAUNDRY?? haha (maybe Scentsy Fragrance: Clean Breeze: White florals with a touch of spring; this is the scent of fresh, clean laundry.)
That's all for now,
All my love,
Brittany Gerrity
